Aquascaping categories--my own take on it.

I save pictures of aquascapes I like for inspiration but I never want to copy them. Only be inspired and creating something new. In my swedish forums It seems like many beginners want to copy the aquascapes of the more famous names. Don't understand that.
 
It helps to practice using established scapes to pattern their own tanks with. No matter how hard you try, no two tanks will ever look or grow the same. Similar yes, but the comparison ends there. When I teach pottery, I teach my students established classic forms. Once they are comfortable with them they naturally end up doing their own thing and expressing 'coffee mug' with their own style and expression. I think that it might be the same with tanks and scapes. They might take a classic convex/island perspective and interpret it with their own imagination and flare. I am glad that you save pics of scapes for inspiration. I also hope that new designs are found in your tank scapes.

can anyone identify the blue and red fish in the last arch photo?

I wanna thank everyone in this thread. This was a great for me as i am just starting out and the collection was amazing to look at. I cant wait till i am able to make things like that. The one thing that i was pleased about is that there really was nothing in here with like an old ruin idea witch is what i want to do once i get the hang of it all. I'm not sure if they are just not done or if people like to stick more with a natural look for the fact of having something more pleasing to the eye. If anyone had something like an old overgrown ruin i would love to see it
 
They're not all that common, they're generally seen as perhaps either a bit tacky, I'm thinking plastic castles or something that are of such a large scale they would more likely be a public aquarium exhibit. I've seen some, they're rarely pretty though. It depends on what you mean by "an old ruin". But yes, typically, as a hobby we try and shy away from anything man made, "nature" is the aim of the game. :)

I saw some really nice model type of displays in Australia by Steve, they were really well done, like model train landscapes and ideas, no live plants, plastic, but the tanks were very impressive. Styrofoam and paint etc, really well done.
Lot of work etc.
 


This is just a quick picture I had found but more or less what i was thinking was hiding the base of it and having grass across the bottom of the scape as well as some other natural looking things around. I figured that I would put mid to heavy plants on the ruin pieces so that it looked like a old city or village that has been forgotten to time and been overgrown by the natural jungle
 
I think it would be a good underwater scene if executed well. Like, it could emulate Atlantis or another sunken city:

I think you could emulate this video Iwagumi style.

I don't see why any art-form should be restricted by any limits or rules. Sure it wouldn't win any competitions, but I bet it'd be an awesome tank to admire at home. If no one transgresses these imposed limitations, then we'll just see the same scapes over and over :p
 
Thanks very much for the vid's and i agree with what you mean on the limitations. Everything we see today is because someone tested and pushed limitations of some kind. My main hobby is actually building motorcycles and I enjoy pushing in new directions in that hobby also. The other thought is i bet that at some point a competitions was either born or won due to people who did new things. Thanks again

Thanks for sharing those amazing videos!! That was truely inspiring! I agree with you two on pushing boundries of visual three dimentional designs. It is a pity that all of those above ground plants will eventually rot and grow huge curtains of algae sweeping and waving in the current. The benches were a kick! Thanks again and I say go ahead with your plans. People have done Castles, hobbit warrens, and cubist plant 'museums in their tanks. It could be really neat to see what you have in store. Those who are unconventional can make marks in history---do it!!
 
I have recently rescaped my 40 gal into an Island form. I am hoping that it will be easier to maintain for longer periods of time. I will post pictures of it soon to document its development. If you kind folks have more interesting pics to share of different tanks then let's see them!

WOW! That is a stunning tank! Who ever developed this sure knows a thing or two about this hobby/art/science. Dutch style is a category that can test the skills of the advanced aquarist. My trimming sucks- I need to work on that. Thanks for sharing the great pic and comment.
 
Sorry for the long delay. I do plan to go forward with my plan and see if i can make it work. I just need a much better understanding of plants and the whole hobby prior to doing so. Also money is holding me back as it is everyone these days. Hopefuly i will be able to afford to do what i want some time in the next few months. Thanks much for the boost Nick. So many people are afraid to push the envelope on new ideas and i completely agree with your comment about who is remembered.
 
UPDATE: I have added a new category that can be found below the Designer category. 'Single Point Perspective' is now present for viewing. I have also added a few extra pictures to other categories. Take a look- let me know what you think....
