My Tank setup

Thanks guys, I added the 2nd airstone in already because it said increase aeration. I'll adjust the spray bar a bit later too.

Also will do another 50% water change today.

I didn't know you could leave them unfed? I'll cut feeding down a lot

Thanks

By cutting the feeding off there is no pollutants getting into the water this helps the fish a lot.

Keep up with the water changes most important.

Some fishkeepers include a day of fasting in their week. It can encourage the fish to 'root out' food and also clear their system out. You also get to watch fish that people say 'never go near the substrate' like rasboras and tetras hovering mm above the substrate picking bits up.

I would say that I include a couple of fasting days (or 3) each week but the truth is more a case of I forget to feed them. lol

My fish and shrimps always fast on the water change days. More fish die from over feeding than fasting.

Good thinking :) I missed a day out.. Will keep that up, one of the ottos died unfortunately. But the other 2 look like they're getting better

I'm about to start my DIY led. Where should I post the build log?

Thanks

As this post is a Journal keep it all together, we can move it if necessary.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Been busy with christmas and such. Trimmed the Cabomba a lot yesterday. Still unsure what to do to my scape. Something doesn't look right to me

Also the LED build has started. When I get round to it I'll post pictures etc

As a starter replace those red rocks to river stones a similar colour to the substrate.

The substrate is very flat lift it up 2-3 inches to give it a bit of shape.

Sorry I've been quiet for a while.
I finished the lights. My next project is to program an arduino controller for them.

I'm having a little nightmare with my filter. It is a fluval 206, the seal has started leaking. And after trying to fix etc I contacted Amazon for a refund. So that leaves me looking for a new filter. I've been looking at eheim Classic, which would people recommend I want quiet and efficient. My tank is 48l but higher flow isn't an issue as I've read I could but a different impeller to slow the flow.

Thanks

Thanks. I'm comparing the classic 150 and an eheim Ecco 130. The classic doesn't come with shut off valves and seems to have to way to prime it?
Thanks

So I went for the Ecco 130 as it came with all the shut off valves etc.
and it's way more quiet than the old fluval one (still keep checking it's working)
I also added a ton of new plants (pictures to follow)

I made a start with my LED build log that I'll finish off ass I get time

I think the green spot algae on your tank walls indicates a lack of PO4 or a long period of illumination , maybe both.
My suggestion and advice is to reduce lighting program especially now you have new plants that need accommodation otherwise you will have problems with algae , especially BBA.

P.S. green spot , you should wipe it out when you'll make the weather change

The side walls are furry and I've had some hair algae growth on the rocks and wood.
I though too much phosphate = algae. I'll try get hold of a phosphate test and see.

The lighting may be a factor. I upped it recently. And am planning to get arduino to dim/fade/time.
I've cut the lighting down but there's still that issue. Would it be worth scrubbing and vaccing the sides?

I would certainly clean all the sides of the tank and have a big snail kill before they get out of control

Check with Roy I am positive he just bought an Assassin Snail to kill his snails off.

Keith:):)

I'll give the sides a clean tonight. As for the snails. I kill off all the pest ones when I see them. But I keep the MTS as they regulate population themselves? Is there and fish I could get to keep population low without killing them all (I know loaches are too big for this tank)

deanc

Get 3 small Clown Loaches they are very slow growers and don't feed them let them scavenge for their food snails.

Take the DW out regularly and give it a good sterilising by doing that you will decrease the snail population as well.

You will also find them all over the rock and in your filter.

Keith:):)

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for them. Although I'm planning on shrimps soon. Would clown loaches eat those?
What would i sterilise the wood in? I moved it a little last water change and a bit broke. So it may be time for a new piece.

Thanks

deanc

The CLs would love you very much for the snacks of the shrimp fry.

I am not a favourite of boiling wood but that would be the best way to kill them all on the DW.

Best plan get a new piece.

Quickly dip an iceberg lettuce leaf in boiling water then when cool add it to the tank and take it out next morning.

All of these methods will not remove 100% of the snails but it will help you to keep them under control.
