Owning a cat and a planted tank

My cat loves stalking fish, and has managed to catch a couple with ease from my tank. I want to go rimless, but unfortunately it seems like this won't be possible with my fish-loving panther.

All coming around to say, I need cover-glass. Will this impact on the health of my planted tank? Does anyone else have this issue? Has anyone trained their cat to leave the tank alone? Any hints or tips?

Many thanks in advance.

Scare the *%%$ out of the cat when it perches up above the tank. If you keep it up it should help. You will have to be diligent for a period of time. If it's possible perhaps keep the cat out of the room unless you can be there to supervise/pounce. Cats are harder to train than dogs but it's possible.

As for a glass cover. I have no experience to comment other than to say surely you could have a cover with holes in it or some sort of mesh cover. Perhaps acrylic, but it might affect the lighting too much.

Good luck

Hi Glenn,

As I can tell you that I have similar problem - but my cat is just drinking a water from my aquarium.
I already used a cover glass but it's making two problems:
1. There is a lot of water (drops) on it from the bottom - looks bad.
2. It's affecting a light - a bit, but it can be a problem if your W/litre is not so high.

I agree that cover glass isn't the most attractive of options. I have found that cover glass can be difficult to keep clean due to white mineral deposits, and occasionally some algae which in turn affects the flow of light into the tank. I just wish my cat wasn't so into fish murder..
