How to use back-lighting for photography purposes

Another example:
Tank of my friend from Croatia. Tank is located in the attic. Sloped roof is screen behind tank. Pure improvisation - cost nothing. Bulb on chair covered with paper or something else as colored filter. This is central light source and gives radial effect of lighting (not linear as light tube)

IMO excellent result with just a little imagination… In a split of second with backlight it is possible to change overall sense of tank.

Tank with black background:

Background removed. With buble back light in the slightly different positions and color "filters":-"

Each of Aquascapes have a different appeal about them, it goes to show with a little thought you can change your Aquascape from good to excellent.

I thought I should bring the back lighting up again I think it will assist newer members using back lighting.

Its easy to see how different lighting on the same Aquascape can make a big difference.

Its just a matter of keep trying, taking plenty of photos and notes how it was done.

I suggest you start by doing some research on Aquarium back lighting.

What are your ideas on back lighting or special lighting effects.
@biobio hit it on the head pretty well. Gels have been used in the photo/film world for quite a while for background effect, hair lighting, and atmosphere. Works well in this application for sure. It's use can easily be overdone though. Subtlety is key here. Don't fall into the trap of "oh cool look at this" and completely over-do it. Keep it minimal and tie it into the over-all effect as a compliment, not a focal point.

Thank you for posting that interesting and helpful information.

Midnight transformation caused by lighting: man into a werewolf or a princess into Cinderella or Anubia nana into Buchepalandra...
Fish can appare and be vibrant colored or disappear and be camouflaged (depending on it coloration and light color above tank).
