Aspiring Aquascaper
I’m up for any feedback so please feel free to share. This will be a Glut based tank for now but I may go pressurised CO2 in time. I’m really after some practice aquascaping and experience keeping a few different plants. As far as a 'look' I guess it’s nature-style I’m after. We'll see if I actually have the skills to make look natural.. I'm not so confident!

Plants.. I may have a shot at growing some Glosso in the foreground. I was thinking Crypt Parva to accent around the base of the wood, or Hairgrass, or Anubias Nana ‘Petite’ or Staurogyne Repens.. I can’t decide. In the centre of the wood I may attach something like Needle-leaf Java Fern. For the background I’m not sure so I’d love some advice.

Size: 35cm cube
Substrate: ADA Amazonia New
Other stuff: LED light (low/medium light?), Tank is 11g. I was hoping to keep Fire / Ember Tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae).

This tank can be viewed from the couch off to the left, so the scape is meant to look okay in both directions. I couldn't go rimless; one of the joys of cat ownership :)

Let me know what you think.

Hi Glenn, Love it that DW  Keep the planting KIS and you have a winner there Mate(y) Stauro/rep and small Anubiua Glosso or HC Cuba would look good Hair grass ??? lots of people have problems with that:( So did i when i tried it ??? you may do better ;) Looking forward to your next up date

Thanks Roy. I'll steer clear of hairgrass I think..

A quick equipment list:

Tank: 35cm Cube, 11g (44L)
Filter: Eheim 2213
Heater: Hydor Inline 200w
Substrate: ADA Amazonia New
Light: 30cm LED

My tap water is 8.2pH, 1KH, 2GH

I adjust to: 8.2pH (I'm not sure how far pH will fall with Aquasoil yet.. I haven't filled it!), 4KH - I use Aquasonic Carbonate Hardness Generator to raise KH, 7GH - I use CaCl (Calcium Chloride) to raise GH. I dose Mg (Magnesium) with trace ferts.

Ferts: Will be adding K while the Aquasoil leeches nutrients initially. After this, regular EI regime.
Gluteraldehyde: I use Dinosaur Spit, which is available locally in Australia.

Here are some pics of the livestock I'm after - Hyphessobrycon amandae.

Thanks Keith! I intent to be patient and KIS. I've rushed in the past, but I prefer to take my time these days to learn as I go without over-complicating things.

I'm not sure exactly Cornokz. I bought this from my LFS. Anyone able to help with an ID?

Here's where I'm up to with planting so far. I'm a bit stuck now. I'm not sure what plant will work well in the background. I'm wanting something like Valisneria, but I can't use it because it doesn't do well with glut. I'd love some feedback on this.

Glen

Anubias nana petite ????

I hope you have a very big bank account and plenty of time.
I managed to find some it worked out just over $6 per leaf and today after about 2 years it would just cover 15sq cms

I think you mean Anubia nana.

There are several tall Crypts that will grow across the back and through the DW

Keith:):)

Wow. Didn't know that petite was so slow growing and expensive $$! I will substitute for nana instead. I wasn't thinking crypts but you have got my mind ticking over.. any recommendation on a suitable crypt variety?

I have had this piece for close to 2 years now.
Its so delicate I had to glue it to a twig of wood.
Crypts sorry I bought most of mine or given to me.
C wendtii 30cm is an easy one to grow
Hunt the for sale topics on the Aust Forums.
You will find an assortment of names as they are what they bought them as.

Hi Glenn, With the planting at the back Eleochars SP would look good behind the DW or on LH side to hide the filter pipes A little. Will look awesome with a shoal of Hyphessobycon Amandae  Big name for a little fish:D

Looks like a difficult prospect Keith. I really don't think 'petite' is going to be of much use.

But weren't Eliocharis sp. to be avoided? I thought that members were having some real nasty luck with Eliocharis lately?

Hi Glenn, Eleochars sp is same Species of plant. But has thicker stems and grows a lot taller. Have a look on Tropica aquarium plants Its the one i am going to put in my 1st Aquascape at the back. Stunning plant;) Not like the small ones at all :) Well never grown it but am going to give it a try ;) Can always replace if not doing well:D

Thanks Roy, sounds like a great suggestion. I'll look into it a bit more. I'm not sure whether they are available here in Australia so I'll start researching.

Glen it will not matter which tall plant you have at the back with all that open space once establish it will fill the back in very quickly.

This is where I would start they only have quality plants but be prepared to pay for quality and correctly labeled.

Thanks for that link Keith. I hadn't checked out Liverpool until now. They have a seriously good range of plants available, better than I have seen anywhere else in Australia so far. Yes looks like you pay a pretty hefty price for quality and supply. To be honest I'm not too worried about the price so long as I get quality and a diverse range of plant choices.

How about any kind of ferns for the background?

Needle leaf java ferns :)

Have to get them grow tall

Hi junglefowl. I love needle-leaf fern, one my favourites. I feel that it may grow a little large for my relatively small cube though. I think that it would look best perched right in the middle of the driftwood if anywhere. I liked Keith's idea of using Crypts. I think that a mix of Crypt. Wendtii 'green' and 'red' might work. If I plant a red variety at the magic 1.6 point (see drawing above) and then use the green variety around it, I hope that this will give good depth and a nice point of interest. If this fails, I will probably head straight to needle-leaf fern.
