Capping Soil

I have a 50g tank that is lightly planted and only has tiger barbs, the plants are in Tropica soil and the fish have learnt to dig or pull up the plants and eat the new root growth, can I cap the soil with gravel to stop them ?

Barbs can be aggressive herbivores. I would suggest using less palatable plants. Hornwort, Anubias species, Java ferns, Cryptocorynes, most mosses, and a few others to name a few. I would not suggest capping Tropica Soil as it will assist in crushing the granules causing a muddy mess. The other option is to pick more plant friendly fish.

Best regards,

Stuart

@rsstj The Soil substrate and dirt planted tank by Tim Harrison is worth a read. Ever thought about using the alternative Tropica Substrate which is recommended capping and as the tank is lightly planted you could redo it but save the soil for future. In this way you would have the benefit of soil and instant anchor for plants. Otherwise plants like suggested by CRS Fan
