My all-time favorite fish is the Cardinal tetra, Paracheirodon axelrodi - as seen in my signature. Beautiful, peaceful, social, fairly easy- the perfect little community fish.

Lauralee... Would you recommend the Cardinal to those who don't have any luck keeping the Neon, like me. I've heard that the Cardinal is easier & hardier then the Neon, just don't know how true that is. I just love the look of these fish in a planted tank, but unfortunately the Neon drops like flies for me.

That's a very difficult one... My favourite fish has to be either the Marbled hatchet, Bleeding heart tetra or Panda apisto.

As with a lot of others here it's a simple but difficult question.

I love sitting & watching my CPDs, Konia Eisentrauti & I love the way my Synodontis Multipunctatus react to my Elongatus but I suppose ultimately my fave has to be Murphy my Oscar - acting just like the dogs !!

yes you are right, the cardinals have less requests and dont need as soft watter as neons

IMO it's all about the stock you can find; source and how they've been handled. Most Neons in the hobby are captive-bred, in the US they're largely imports from Asia. Distance/ shipping stress and exposure to entirely new pathogens of all sort en route to a hobbyist's tank takes a big toll. Neon Tetra Disease has also been a huge problem in recent years.

Most Cardinal tetras in the US are wild-caught in S.Am. Again, shipping time and handling en route are crucial.

I always prefer Cardinals because I can usually get better stock, and I also just think they're prettier.

IME good practices to follow when buying tetras:
-ask lots of questions about source
-don't buy if they've been in the store less than 2 weeks
-don't buy if any fish in the store shows signs of ich or fungus
    -drip acclimate them
-ALWAYS QT for at least 2 weeks once you get them home before adding to the main tank

I really love Apistogramma and other dwarf cichlids like Taeniacara candidi. I keep both...Apistogramma bitaeniata is my favorite.

Here is a picture of a male I bred reaching maturity.

I also love discus but the tank needs to be very large. Here is my recent discus pair.

I'm a big fan of the Hawaiian blue swordtails, Koi swordtails are neat too... But all-in-all I don't really have a favorite fish, I like a lot of different fish I guess it just depends on what I'm trying to do with the tank...

The favourites of all the fish I have had have to be the LDA25 pitbull plec. Had 2 groups of 4 of these over the past couple of years and are great little characters. My next favourite would have to be Bolivian Rams which I had last year

Chinese algae eaters. This time I set my tank up ended up with a lot of algae on the wall of tanks and string algae on the plants. The walls are almost clean since I added 2 of them. They are keeping my favorite plant a Dwarf Lilly clean. They come out and greet me too.

    Electric Blue Rams

I have recently become quite fond of blue rams the electric blue or neon blue variety. They are beautiful blue, although sensitive to water conditions and it has taken me a little while to do well with them. I'm looking forward to a pair breeding shortly.

I also loved Aquasaur's pictures of his killies and hope to one day keep some of these fish as well. They are very cool.

After last night I would have to say my Bristlenose is my favourite fish. I did a partial water change 2 days ago and somehow my new 1 inch long bristlenose got scooped out, and after not seeing it for a day and pretty much moving everything in the tank looking for him I ended up finding him in the bag that I put the rock I removed in to for storage. The bag had about 4 teaspoons of water in it which was freezing cold! Took the lil chap out, put him back in the tank and he carried on like nothing had happened.
    :celebrate:
