Awhile back I asked the a question, "why do you participate in aquascaping competitions" and from the responses most people said they wanted to see how they ranked compared to their aquascaping counterparts. Now not all aquascapes are made with the purpose of being critiqued and entered into aquascaping competitions. Well, wait a second. Maybe some of you create several scapes and then pick the best one for the competition?

Early on, my personal motives of aquascaping was more to illicit responses from online communities then by my real life house guests who see the tank in person. In a way my motives to create a scape was for the "glamor" that was created/received from the aquascaping communities. Later on, I started to aquascape more so for myself and went with the things I liked instead of changing a scape to meet the comments from my online friends.

So the discussion question here is, who do you aquascape for?

For me 80% for the kids 20% but the kids would be happy with plastic animals in the tanks and pink gravel so more towards 100% for me.

I love comments and suggestions, I take them or leave them.
I appreciate hearing other people's honest takes on them. Some suggestions are just not what I am trying to do. Others are kind of "maybe if I end up needing to change something" and then there are the suggestions that light up a bulb and are like "Exactly what I want, why didn't I think of that or see that before"

If you notice in all of the examples, it ends up revolving around what I want so I aquascape (or lack of aquascape) for me mostly to totally.

100% for me. I enjoy every step and take it slowly. No one at home appreciate it. Maybe except for the kids, but there still to small to see it for what it is.

100% me. I love plants. My house is full of them and when it is not winter here, i'm in the garden. It has allowed me to take my hobby to an new interface. I love DIY projects, planning, troubleshooting, etc. Really a wonderful hobby. One day (when school is done) i hope to bring my hobby to a very large scale in my office so that i can share it with my patients and the community. Also aquariums are relaxing hence why we see them in doctors offices. I'm really excited about being able to share my hobby with thousands of other people.

Definitely for others to enjoy, because I get more stress than satisfaction since I can be a little obsessive about the tanks I just can’t stop working on them and one big mistake I make is not to keep up with photography and many times due to “frustration” I take the whole layout down with out even taking a single picture.

For me, my wife and daugther, we all can appreciate them but I am the only that obsesses of them. There is nothing better than the self gratification of visualizing a design and completing that design.

75% for me, 25% for my daughter. I got back into the hobby because my daughter loved "Finding Nemo". I was all stoked to start up a reef tank but decided to try freshwater first, saw the pics of a sweet planted tank and was hooked. My daughter still loves to help out with the tank "Daddy, can we clean the tank today?" :Toofunny:

80% For me. I love the comments when someone comes over and sees my tank. I really like it when they are like how do you get your tank to look like that.

I do for me because I like aquascapes and decorate. I also makes drawings in the computer and have Xbox 360 games that have options to make places like Halo 3 Forge, I love to make places in Foundry. I draw sometimes in Auto Cad and makes airplanes in 3d and places. Thats why I like Aquascaping. I like view diferents tipes of shapes in plants, rocks, driftwood the harmony between all the components. In general I like Art.

This topic reminds me of the ancient discussion about "The King of The Aquarium", lots of folks used to say "Discus Fish of course" ... I answered "I'm the king of my tanks, because I dictate how it is going to be arranged and which specie(s) would live there" LOL.

And aquascaping wise, I arrange the plants, rocks and wood (I don't consider myself an aquascaper.....yet) in my tanks for myself 100%, of course it's a great pleasure to listen or read that someone else likes the tank or if it needs some job offer advise to improve it.

    Great topic John.
