I was in Tokyo last week and dropped by the Sumida Aquarium to see the Takeshi Amano installation there. Just thought I'd share with you all. It was the Spring Holidays so it was quite crowded but I managed to get a few shots which I've included here. Certainly very beautiful tanks and great to see them in person. I had personally overlooked the effectiveness of using sand on top of the substrate but will certainly do that next time having seen these tanks. I'm quite bored of seeing the soil in my tank while waiting for the plants to fill in the gaps, and the sand looks so much better. I hadnt really appreciated that from photos. The only thing was, I was hoping to see more of my favourite plants like hairgrass(es), glosso, HC, etc. which I always associated with Amano, but they didnt seem to feature much. There was a large bed of hairgrass but not really a carpet (pic below). Theres loads on You Tube of these tanks being built if you're interested. Anyway, if you find yourself in Tokyo, its well worth dropping in. Sorry for the dodgy iphone photography.
