I have a rectangular piece of coarse sponge sitting in a tank that is cycling. Is it feasible to use it for creating height/filler beneath the substrate I'll be adding? Was thinking I could shape it into a wedge and place it at the back or corner to create slope. The sponge already has beneficial bacteria built up.

It could be done but Why? it could easily break down and leave you with a mess.
    Styrene Foam has been used.

Personally I would not do it at all.
