In my research I haven't been able to find out if algae generally prefers warmer water or colder water. Each tank, with its plants and animals will have a range of a few degrees that you can set it to. I want to know if I can help stymie the growth of algae by either keeping the tank at the warmer end of the spectrum or the colder end of the spectrum. Thoughts?

Generally, Algae will grow where there are enough resources for survival regardless of temperature.
Fast growing plants will consume the nutrients before the algae can get any, so there's an option for you.

I usually keep a small number of Algae consumers around, so I don't worry too much about being infested with the stuff.
