I just purchased some riparium planters, they came with a very coarse pumice like gravel. I have also seen posts where clay balls are used, and then topped off with a ~4 mm gravel. These systems also require root tabs fairly often from what I have gathered. Can anyone tell me why this is a good idea?

What would be the drawbacks of using organic potting soil with a gravel top? The most obvious would be temporary water staining ( this could last for months). As I am already using this as my substrate this would not bother me in this tank. What other issues would be likely to occur?

I asked these questions on a local club forum and received absolutely no response. Hopefully your world wide and more experienced members would be able to shed some light on this for me.

    Thanks

Sage I will that one to the members who have more knowledge that I have.

What I do know there are many potting soil mixes and that could make the difference between Yes and No.

I just used one of the pot's. I used some of the pumice like material that came with them mixed with Miracle Grow Organic and Floramax. This was topped with CaribSea Supper Natural. Similar to what I used as tank substrate except for the pumice.

Being in Aust sorry those names mean nothing to me except Pumice .

All I can say is try it and watch and note the results carefully.
