A well managed sustainable collection of wildlife is one of the few ways that the local populations in these areas can make a living and still keep their nature un exploited.

Normally the areas where our ornamental fishes live doesn't help the local people in their day to day life, and they usually dont have much to begin with. So when a logging, hydroelectric or palmoil etc. company wants to exploit these areas the locals welcome it since it brings jobs and money to their community. But if they can make a living by collecting wildlife instead, then that is a great reason for them to protect the habitat where that wildlife lives!

I think that to be an environmentalist you have to be pretty well of to start with, and most people in this world are not unfortunately. If it stands between putting food on the table and logging I i sure would choose logging to! If you disagree, think about how much un touched nature we had in the western world before the industrial revolution and compare it to how much we have now.

Both CITES and WWF agrees that a sustainable collection of wildlife is a good way to prevent habitat destruction and at the same time helping the local comunities.

I hope i didn't sound arrogant or rude in this comment, if so i apologize (English isn't my first language).

I would say it's the cost effectiveness that fuels the aquaculture industrie rather than any environmental aspect.

I think collecting wild caught is a good thing for a lot of villages. Setting up fishfarms may be better in the long run. Then having local breeders may be best of all. Catching from the wild will introduce new species, farming will advance breeding techniques and local breeders can bring it close to home. Usually making the breed readily available and cheaper.
