I'm an absolute beginner with no prior experience in keeping an aquarium, but looking to try on the hobby.

Is a planted tank compatable with a cat in the house?
I imagine the tank will have to be covered but will that impede on plant growth?
I'd imagine the issue is to do with limited surface gas exchange with the cover on.

    Thanks for the advice.

i saw some house with planted tanks and yet never read that the cat did something wrong with the plants
inside the tank full of water as well reading that cat having a good swim on the water tank.
if your thinking about cat catching and eating fishes inside the tank will not be possible just make
sure you have cabinet or stand where you can put your planted tank.
cats can not withstand having on the water for a long time or even on a short period of time.
in short cats are afraid of water.

so it is safe to say that planted tank and cat both compatible with each other ;)

as mush as possible no need to cover your tank. it will only generate more heat on your water column.
plants prefer to have a low temp [cooler]tank.

not an expert just my personal opinion.

Welcome to ASW can you fill in your location please.

As a beginner you have started the correct way by asking questions not like many do ask when its too late.
Is this what you mean I have had them sleep up against

This happened when I was building a Terrascape

During out hot summers you could be taking the glass top and lights of but your tank can be covered by making a fly wire screen.
What size of tank are you considering, fish and plants.

Seeing you are a beginner here are two basic rules you should always consider.

Keep It Simple KIS many of the Aquascapes you see here on ASW are done by Aquascapers with many years of experience start of with the basic Aquascape and learn as you go by doing that I guarantee you will have far less problems, and enjoy your new hobby.

The other rule is Less is More and More is Less in other words a simple aquascape can be far more pleasing/rewarding than an Aquascape that is over loaded with plants, rocks, driftwood and, Technology.

This rule is what I have always taught and worked to.
Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do.

    Welcome.. :)

Cats love fish tanks and green houses.. :)
    Sq1poY3.jpg

They always try to drain the tank to get to the fish..

They never give up no matter how often you refill it..

But no worries here you see the fish watching and waiting fearlesly for a chance to get a piece of the cat.

And when i'm working on my Wabi Kusa, mean while they always check if the greenhouse still is OK..

Most important is they leave the fish/plants alone.
