No, it's not. When breeding, they pair up with the male chasing the female. He nudges her rear and initiates the T position where he is perpendicular to her body.

One of the big USA Aquarium magazines had an excellent article on the Otocinclus several years ago.

Just having fun.. :) They are not typical nocturnal but love dimmed light and surface vegetation of you do not have much over hang cover and relatively lot of light, they hide away in the shades and come out at night to play and are very active and want to suck on all that moves and doesn't move.. They are very playful and social fish and when kept in larger schools you'll notice they even have hierarchy in the group. :) They also a very easily spooked and stressed, can even get literally scared to death..

That's a good sign and a healthy tank.. :) Congrats!! They graze on diatoms, other algae, and micro organisme in the biofilm on glass, plants and hardware. They are not strictly vegiterian but also love blanched spinach, tomato, bell pepper, cucumber, and many more vegtables.. :)

These are a few of mine a few moths back, after not trimming for a while. :)

I always found it hard to buy healthy Ottos most LFS had them in a tank with no cover and no natural food.

Keith, they seem to be hard to breed in captivety, so it also seems that most offered are wild catch. There is a video to find on youtube showing how they catch them.. Not going to post it, because seeing that video makes me feel sorry i bought them and support these horrible practice. In reality it seems that about 90% of the wild caught oto's dont survive the trip to the LFS around the world. The ones surviving this stressfull ordeal of the catch and shipment another high percentage dies of stress in the LFS or in our tanks.

With mixed feelings i write. And also ask myself am i (are we) truly animal lovers?? We live in a strange collective.. Anyway, not to you personal, i know you'll probably never buy a fish again since you stoped keeping aquariums. But for the rest reading this, if you want to buy Oto's ask the supplier when the Oto's came in, if they say last week. Don't buy, walk out and come back 4 to 6 weeks later. What still lives in their tanks is strong and might survive the stress again, shipping them from LFS to your tank at home. Any other scenario, you might lose a few if not all.

One of the Admin has breed them very successfully at one stage (many years ago) I did have a good copy but it went in a big clean up.

You would have to go to that forum to get all the information.

The ones at a particular LFS were always stressed out but the inexperienced always bought them.

Because they were stressed out they would not eat (nothing natural to eat any way)and that stressed them out more in the end they just died of malnutrition.
