I am currently in the process of converting my reef tank into a planted tank, I've been away from freshwater too long to remember what's a good amount of water flow. In my reef I have a Sicce 4.0 950 GPH (give or take due to it being a return pump), with 2 MP40w running. Since I won't need as much flow in a freshwater, I was wondering I should sell both of the Mp40w and just keep the Sicce 4.0 running (or maybe upgrade to a larger return pump if necessary. Would 950 GPH be sufficient for my tank Tank Dimension - 48"x36"x20"
Aim for 10x turnover per hour of the tank volume, more isn't always a bad thing this is just a rule of thumb, many scapers use upto and in somecases over 30x myself included with no issue. ps. is this a sumped tank?
It is a sumped tank, I plan to use part of the sump for Mechanical and large portion for biological filtration. So maybe it's best to keep one of the Mp40 operational then
Suck it and see, the mp40 is a brilliant bit of kit down to it's versatility and since it can be dialed up or down it's a good bet. The thing to pay attention to is you plants, if they're swaying in the current and there's no issues with health you've probably enough flow. with it being a sumps you should consider sealing it and minimizing noise to prevent off gassing.
It depend on the scape that you have. Do you inject CO2? If you happen to use good diffuser see if the tiny CO2 bubble circulate through out the tank. If yes then the flow is enough. Sometime you need higher flow if you have dense scape and sometime you need lower flow if you scape something like iwagumi.
