I personally like Attempt #1 best. The angles and the textures of the rocks are better showcased.

Keep in mind the smaller of the rocks will likely disappear or sink into your substrate, limiting their visibility.

Thanks John. Its a lot harder then I thought it would be trying to get a good layout.

Yeah I thought layout 1 was the better of the 2, Im going to have a play about over the next few days and see what I come up with. I really do like the stone it has some lovely textures :)

    Gary

The three major rocks looking good, its the four smaller rocks (red dots) lack character and look out of place.

My suggestion would be replace them with three small to medium with plenty of character (all different sizes).

Position one at the right and two on the left you will have to get one side correct first you should have plenty of options depending on the character of each rock.

Also remember the all the rocks should be buried into the substrate not sitting on top

That brings me to the next two points use sand or ?? in you mock up that will certainly help sooner rather than later you will have to plan how you intend to lay the substrate.
Second have you decided on your substrate you selection will either make your Aquascape a good one or just average.
