Hello, does anyone have any experience with these and or with the dennerle cubes in general? I picked up one of the 20l ones at a bargain price (over half rrp!) and it's got absolutely everything, light, filter, substrates even got a piece of sumatra nano thrown in there for nout and very pleased with my purchase I am indeed.

Next question is are they actually any good at growing plants? Namely without co2, I know dennerle show them lushly planted out on the box literature but there's no clue as to if they're with co2 or not or even with the standard lamp?
Is anyone running them with a heater or are they fine without? I know the filters are supposedly a bit naff but that's no large concern I've a couple of suitable ones kicking about.

Any info from anyone who's set one up and had it running would be greatly received.

    Gareth.

    Hi Gareth,
I have plenty of them, they are really cool ;)

as for low tech one lamp is enough, with co2 you should get an additional one.
I would replace the small filter with any HOB filter
Dennerle deponit mix is fine, but has to be topped with quarz gravel or aquasoil.
their daily fert is not good for me, just take any other micro/macro.

heating or not depends on the inverts and your room temp, I used to heat mine before but now I do not and no problems

You have "plenty"?! How many do you have?

I have the option to change to an 18w clip on if needs be, if I were go to down the co2 route I'd have to invest in a regulator, ideally the cheapest possible one going, I've used the lunapet ones and love them, that'd be my reg of choice but the price has jumped since I bought mine.

Substrates wise I've got the deponit mix and the shrimp sand as well as ADA and Columbo substrates available to me. I'd probably chuck the ferts anyway, I'm a dry doser so have plenty of ferts.

I'd be keeping cherries/bees I think they should be fine the house stays pretty warm all things considered.

I have a tetratec ex700 I can throw at the tank if needs be but I'd rather use the intank filter if I'm honest, can't afford to buy another external, unless I can find someone who wants to swap a ex for an ehiem haha.
