Any tips on how to clean algae? from glass, from plants? thanks
Use carbon plus but be carefully for plan like elatine, moss, bolbitis......don't use it too much
Depend on what type of algae you have. Different algae cause by different think, I'm sure you prefer to prevent it rather than cleaning it every day . The link in Peter thread should be able to help you to identify which algae and how to prevent it.
photo would be help.
razor blade works best.... on glass tank only....
Get some fish that likes to eat the stuff.
nerite snails are nice and helpful inverts too
Caridina Japonica are the best cleaners
Dont focus on the cleaning part! Focus in controlling those algae.
There are various algae treatment nowadays, but which really works? Algae are part of the water's ecosystem, that's why no matter how hard you try to remove all those algae -- you wont!!!
The basic control method is dont place your tank/aquarium in the place that receives too much sunlight. Algae love direct sunlight -- awkward, right?
Also try to use algae-eating plants such as the Japanese Mirimo balls. these plants compete with algae for oxygen. Avoid overfeeding fish because the feeds can give off nutrients for algae.
How to clean algae from your fish tank?
You should change the water everyday until the water becomes clear again. However dont change more than 20% of the water everyday. Scrub carefully the walls of the aquarium to remove all algae.
Lara, Some good advice, mostly terrible.
FOCUS ON THE CAUSE NOT THE EFFECTS would be the best advice. Also, Marimo balls are just another algae, no miracle cure utter garbage suggesting they do.
Identify the algae you have, look up the cause, treat the cause while at the same time taking steps to eradicate it.
The biggest causes are ammonia, instability of co2 and unhealthy plants, all are easily avoided with a good methodic clean and eagle eye for possible problems like glassy leaves or other such problems before algae can pounce.
Also, it is possible to have an algae free tank, I've had two with no visible algae, look at how many Oliver Knott, Tom Barr, Amano, Farmer have!
Here's a link, I suggest you forget what you know and read it all with an open mind.
