I have cherry shrimp having young in my sump filter. The foam pre filter has a colony of about 20 baby shrimp on it. Need to clean the filter but don't want to kill the shrimp, any suggestions. Here is a picture of the filter. Foam is black media on the top right of filter. Sump filtration.jpg

You should be able to take the sponge out and put the fry into the tank. What you take out use a small net to catch the remainder.

You biggest problem is stopping them getting into your sump. The best way is to use a prefilter over the inlet if not you will continually have them in your sump filter.

Had a prefilter in the overflow but the guppy fry were getting caught and being killed. Plus the assassin snails were eating anything that went in. Will try shaking the sponge in the tank first that way all the uneaten food will go back in the tank to eat. I think that's why they're in there in the first place along with the full grown shrimp.

Can you post a few photos of the inlet and what you previously tried.

Near as I can see I have about 30 baby cherry shrimp in the tank and filter, all about 3/8" or longer. Amano shrimp are 1.25" and bearing eggs but none will hatch in fresh water. The 40 breeder tank has the male pineapple swords with female Lyer Tailed High finned swords. Will be getting an aquaclear filter for it, either the 70 or the 110. Taking aaother shipment of plants to LFS for trade, found out what I was sold as Java moss was actually Taiwan moss.

Thank you for the updates, I assume the shrimps are now breeding in the filter as there would always be plenty of food for the fry there.

Any photos of the moss please? Which of the mosses do you prefer and the easiest to grow?

The Taiwan moss is the easiest and fastest to grow but needs constant trimming. The Christmas moss builds up layers and easy to control but grows slower.
