    I'm looking for the best (most efficient) sponge filter design.

    I like how the ones with the suction cups look...a little more esthetic:

    Versus the Hydro sponge filters:

    However, I've heard the Hydro ones are basically one of the best ones on the market.

    Anyone have any experience with any sponge filters and have advice?

    I have the Elite one pictured above, and they work well. I squeeze them out every few weeks and they are seem to capture alot of the fine debris (noted by the brown/dirty water when I squeezed them out).

    Pros with the Elite:
    * Appears to work well
    * Lots of surface area
    * Sponge has lasted for two years (for me) without any tearing/replacing.
    * Sponges are adjustable from vertical position to horizontal positioning.

    Cons
    *Takes up a good amount of space (can be hard to hide).

    Honestly, I think either one would work since they are basically built on the same design principles (sponge, air, water). The difference lies in surface area and sponge material...and the Hydro is something that sits on the bottom of the tank (no suction cups).

    This video might be of interest. It shows you how to install a Hydro Sponge Filter.
