Saturday (10/5-2008) I did a lecture on Aquascaping for some members of the danish aquatic plant site 2008*-*Akvarieplanter.dk.

After the 1½ hour lecture, where we discussed rules, hardscape, techniques and practical aquascaping - I held a short competition in hardscaping layout.

I had made a cardboard aquarium with an open front. The size 60x30x36cm.

I had a selection of rocks and driftwood and a bag of fine sand.

This was the layout everyone had to start with. No one besides the person scaping and me saw the finished layout. I took 2 photos and took it apart and placed the sand back in its initial position.

The competition was fairly hard - only 3 minutes per person. Think of that... That only gave time to do 1 try!

So heres the shots from all. No one had any experience on aquascaping before that...

Interesting not even using a tank to do it!

Well - its just for the fun of it - its better to use instead of a tank, because you get the access from the front and don't have a chance of breaking some glass...
People can learn how difficult it is to do something fast and use their instinct instead of thinking too much.
Afterwards we talked about the different layouts - what was good and what could be changed or done different.
This way everybody learns something and maybe discover what they actually have done. In 3 minutes - you dont get time to think.

This is such a great idea for any club to try among their members. For the record, I liked the arrangement with the wood as a mound in the center.

What kind of tips developed, and what lessons were learned from the whole event regarding hardscaping placement?

Nice to see new ideas are coming in to the hobby, very creative Kristoffer, thanks for sharing.

I think hardscaping is one of the toughest aspects to setup an aquascaped planted tank.

Why not real tank made of glass w/o water? It would be much more realistic approach. However, not bad at all...
