    Hi everyone,
I started my tank with DSM about five weeks, and I mentioned that my white sand turn to brown. When I take a look closer, I saw this
    IMG_3013.JPG
Is that algae? If it is, how do I deal with that. I use light for 4hrs and 6hrs with 2hrs rest between. I'm using flourish excel mixed with water to spray plants everyday, since I heard that excel can prevent algae. It just appears this week after I added more hemianthus callitrichoides.

we can't tell you not unless you post a clearer photo. diatoms[brown algae] is common in a new tank
because beneficial bacteria is not establish yet but it will be gone soon as soon the tank mature.

You should not have any standing water in a DSM. Its more about humidity. I would reduce the water level so you do not see standing water.

Do you have a gravity well on the wall or is your pic rotated 90 degrees ? o_O
Be great if the former is true

Just done my first DSM and never had water above Substrate as advised by Shadowmac (y). All went excellant, had to be careful it didnt get too moist as mould started in mine, controlled it by airing tank at night, little minor algae here and there on AS but no big deal. all cleared after flooding. Mine lasted about 8weeks

Thank you guys for very good advices. I was a little bit busy. I'm trying to borrow a camera from my friend because my phone can't take good pictures of that. I reduced the time of lighting, I will reduce the water level and upload a better picture as soon as I can. Thank you again.

Thank you Keith, I did a mistake that I reduced the lighting. Now I increase the lighting time and will vacuum the old white sand and replace with new white sand

I had algae off a few types on my AS above and below the substrate level. I just ignored it, all cleared up after flooding. Had my lights on full intensity of 12hrs a day for the whole DSM
