Is there a particular reason for using gravel instead of sandy base for the crab?

because it's an old setup that I have used at the moment for my couple of crabs.
still thinking how to do the new setup for them, still have 10kg of fine white sand but that gets dirty so fast

Is it possible to some beach sand sieve the fines out and give it a good wash.

The beach is about 5 minutes from my house :).
Doesn't sound like a bad plan, maybe mix a little of my white sand in to make it a bit lighter.
I'm also planning on keeping it a very simple setup for the crabs, since they would probably eat any plant I would put in the tank :)
Just sand and a few rocks or wood so they can go out of the water when they want to.

If you are so close to the beach collect other bits and pieces (rocks, shells etc) you think will look OK , the more natural it looks the better it will be.
