I haven't used this but I remember folks saying that it was too light and made it slightly difficult to keep plants down during the initial stages of planting. People have used this stuff in the past and have had good results.

As I was looking through the product specs it's interesting to note that Carbsea says it's not really suitable for planted aquariums. Here's the link. But that could just be a marketing element to push their Eco Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate (which is a great one btw).

I used it to cover my substrate cable heater, as sand is an excellent heat-conductor..

AND the Moon Sand is said to NOT alter the pH of the water..

I don't think you need to boil it. I can't think of a reason why you would want to. It should be good to go after a rinse or two.

According to users, out of the bag it doesn't have an effect on pH, which you want to keep low with CRS (Crystal Red Shrimp).

Yeah, I don't think there's ANY substrate out there that you need to boil, is there?

Lowell, let us know how it goes. It's been a while since people have been using this substrate, so it'll be interesting to hear of any new developments or how it looks today in a planted tank.
