Default fish that school/swim higher in the tank?

I have glowlight tetras that school in the lower half of the tank and have never been near the top, and I would like to have somebody swim up there once in a while besides my lazy betta who only occasionally goes up there to blow bubbles. the tank looks good in the lower 2/3 but up top it's very dull. Any suggestions?

P.P.

hatchetfish, mollies, gouramis (if you have some floating plants), and some rasbora species (although these don't really stay at the top, but they will spend a bit of time up there!).

hey Church and Aaron,
thanks for the advices. I think the penguin tetra is exactly what I am looking for, the others suggested indicate they may have troubles getting along with certain aspects of my tank, but I really love gouramis so some day....

Thanks again, PS, Aaron, you have a great eye for your aquascape. Sorry your java fern is so slow-growing, I have troubles with mine that way too.

P.P.

yes, danio species seem to congregate at the top of the tank. The are very active as well - maybe too active for some tastes, but I like mine alot.

I also enjoy the Danio species for their constant playful activity. At one time, I had a small collection of the glo-bright danios. They would play games like hide-and-seek and follow the leader. Lots of fun to watch.
I just picked up a small school of leopard danios yesterday at my LFS. Those suckers don't sit still at all, they constantly move around exploring everything.

Just so you know, certain gouramis are very peaceful, unlike a few notable others. The honey and sunset gouramis come to mind.

White cloud minnows spend a great deal of the time near the surface as well. They do school too.

Roy, I thought white clouds were colder water fish...? am I mistaken? Of course the LFS guy told me that, so...

Also, I really like honey gouramis, thanks for that tip Church. I thought they were a fairly aggressive group until now.

white clouds are sometimes known as coldwater tropicals, they can stand about 24C i think - similar to danios
