I read an article by Takashi Amano, with trimming Riccia. He recommends simply mowing riccia with curved tip scissors. Remember to turn off the filter and any water flow. Go slowly and trimmed into the shape you want. He noted it was especially important to have the riccia tied down properly initially so that the bunches would stay down even after a trim.
For Trimming Pelia, I've always trimmed, using the same method as above for riccia. Trimming and shaping the bunch until I was happy with it. After a trim, you can take a net to capture all the leftovers. For mosses, the same trim to shape rules apply. To get a fluffier looking moss, I found it best just to leave it alone and it grows on itself all on it's own. Java and Fissidens are good moss examples that grow like this. With trimming mosses, makes sure you grab any loose strands that you trim, or else it will get everywhere you don't want it to. -John N.
