If you get plastic and get it the way you want it, then you can leave it just fine.
Use rocks to help keep it separate.

You will have to do some cleaning as small particles of Eco WILL get on the sand from time to time.
You can use tweezers to pick it out when there is just a little.
You can use a hose to siphon it off.
The hose is easier to use then a full gravel vac because you can get small pieces out with better accuracy.
